If you like the idea of spending some time living in the UK and improving your English then give some thought to living with a family and working as a Au Pair. Au Pairs are unmarried men and women between the ages of 17 and 27 who come to Britain to improve their knowledge of the English language, to absorb the a different culture and to live for a time as a member of an English-speaking family.

Why use an agency to find a host-family when there are so many families on the Internet looking for Au Pairs? If you find your family without using a good agency, you will have no-one to support and help you if things go wrong. You will have no way of knowing if what the host-family is asking you to do is correct. You have nothing to lose by using an agency, and everything to gain!

Your host-family will ensure that you have a room to yourself in which you can study. Sometimes there is a television and/or a radio in your room, but not always. If not, you will be able to watch the family's television. You will generally eat your meals with either the entire family or with the children. [Sometimes your hosts will return from work very late and it may be more practical for you to eat earlier with the children than to wait until, possibly, 9pm for your dinner!]. Your host-family will give you minimum pocket-money of £60 a week [if you are working 25 hours] plus full board and lodging.

Your host-family will expect you to help with general housework such as hovering, dusting, washing the floors of the kitchen and bathroom and ironing - the sort of household tasks you probably do at home when helping your parents. You will obviously be expected to keep your own bedroom clean and tidy. You will also be expected to help with caring for the children. This may include taking them to the park, walking them to and from school, helping with preparing their meals, and bathing them. If they are older you may be needed to supervise their homework. You will not be expected to have sole-charge of babies/very young children unless you have a great amount of experience or are a trained nurse. Working hours will generally be 25 a week plus 2 evenings' babysitting. You will have two completely free days each week. Some families need an Au Pair Plus who works more hours for more money. Please tell us if you prefer this option but please note that you can only work as an Au Pair Plus if you come from a country within the European Union.

There will be time and opportunity for English classes. We will never place you where you cannot attend a local English language college. Some colleges are more expensive than others. You can expect to pay about £250-£300 a term [semester] . Most Au Pairs attend school for about 6 or 9 hours a week and the above fees are based on two classes a week, each of 3 hours. For EU nationals there are opportunities for free language courses but these fill up very quickly and you should be prepared to pay for a course..

Holiday - Au Pairs are entitled to a week's holiday after six months and a further two weeks' holiday after a year in addition to all Public Holidays. If the family goes away and leaves you at home they should pay you your usual pocket-money plus a reasonable food allowance.

You are responsible for paying your own fare to England . The longer you are able to remain here the more chance we have of finding you a good family. We find it difficult to place anyone who wants to stay for less than 9-12 months.

WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU AT ANY TIME! We will send you our Welcome Package as soon to await your arrival. We can give you advice about language schools and, if you are having an unhappy time with your family we will help you to find a new one.
